Kookaburras awaiting World Cup opener

The Kookaburras arrived in India earlier this week ready to commence their World Cup campaign on Sunday. They will take on England at midnight Sunday night with the match broadcast LIVE on Fox Sports 3. Click here to check the Fox Sports schedules for live coverage and make sure you don't miss the Kookaburras - including NSW Simon Orchard, Matthew Butturini and Kieran Govers in action.

The Kookaburras took out their lead-up series against New Zealand with two convincing victories in Perth last week and are looking to impress early in the pool stages of the World Cup with match ups against England, home side India followed by South Africa, Spain and Pakistan before the finals stages.

The Kookaburras departure to India was following thorough investigations and security briefings. The Hockey Australia official statement outlined:

"The advice received from government sources states that there is a strong commitment and tangible evidence of the authorities ability to implement robust security measures to ensure our team's safety at all times. All threats have been assessed and there are no known credible World Cup threats at this time. DFAT's travel advice is consistent with these findings.

"Hockey Australia's Board, Chief Executive and Team Management have accessed all this information and discussed the findings in consultation with security experts. The findings have been communicated to team members prior to their departure to ensure that they have all the information available to inform their decision of whether they choose to participate."

2010 NSW Arrows team named to defend AHL title

The NSW Arrows final squad of 20 athletes for 2010 has been announced following rigorous training and selection processes.

The NSW Arrows will compete in the 2010 Australian Hockey League (AHL) under the new revised format which will see them play two rounds in Hobart and Darwin in May before finals week in Adelaide in early June.

The 2009 NSW Arrows went through the AHL undefeated and will enter the 2010 season hoping to protect their brilliant run and the prestigious national champions title.

The 2010 Arrows coach, NSWIS women's hockey program head coach Anthony Thornton has high hopes for the team, which features no less than eight current AIS/Hockeyroos squad members and five Australian Junior World Cup athletes.

"I am delighted in the quality of this group of players. There is significant competition for places in the team and that is great for hockey in NSW."

In addition, the team has called upon the experience of ex-NSW and Australian representative Bianca Netzler who retired from international hockey following the 2004 Athens Olympic Games.

Netzler, 33, a midfielder has continued to play hockey in the South Coast Women's competition in recent years and has relished the chance to return to the Arrows squad.

The Arrows will play their first official trial match in the coming weeks as part of the Women's Sport Festival in Sydney Olympic Park from March 5-7.

The NSW Arrows will take on the Canberra Strikers (women's AHL team) in a double-header trial on Saturday March 6 and Sunday March 7 at Sydney Olympic Park Hockey Centre.

Entry to both days will be free to all spectators and will be one of the only chances to see the NSW Arrows in action on home soil in 2010 (due to the draw no home rounds are played).

2010 President's Forum a success!

Hockey NSW hosted its inaugural President's Forum on Saturday February 20 which saw a gathering of 30 association President's at Sydney Olympic Park Hockey Centre for a productive day of discussion and brainstorming.

All attendees were involved in a brainstorming session which involved mapping the strategic directions for the future of Hockey NSW.

In addition there were presentations from Hockey Australia President Stuart Grimshaw, information on updates to Association law and from fellow associations who have implemented recruitment and retention programs.

Copies of all the presentations from the President's Forum are now available at www.hockeynsw.com.au.
